Definitions

BIPOC: Stands for “Black, Indigenous, and People of Color”. This particular term emphasizes that although all POC experience racism and oppression, it’s important to specifically bring awareness to Black and Indigenous peoples, due to the prevalence of anti-Blackness and erasure/seeming invisibility of Indigenous populations.

Community Birth: This term refers to births that are planned to take place at home or in a freestanding birth center with a midwife or other trained birth attendant. Historically, the term “Out of Hospital” has been used, but we are seeing a shift in terminology and at OMF we greatly prefer to use Community Birth.  To learn more about the importance of terminology, check out “Community vs. Out of Hospital: What’s in a name?” by Cheyney, et al, 2019.
